Green IT - What it Means to You and Me

»'Green IT' is the "optimal use of information and communication technology for managing the environmental sustainability of enterprise operations" (Gartner).

Back in 1992, the Energy Star, a voluntary labeling program, was created in the US as an international standard for energy-efficient consumer products. Since then, Governmental agencies across the world have continued to implement standards and regulations that encourage green computing.
Organisations embark on Green IT initiatives as it makes sense to reduce costs and improve efficiency. For the environmentalists and greenies, that's something to cheer about.

So what does Green IT mean to us? What must I do? Why do I care?

»We play a part

The people at the Centre for IT Services are taking steps to being green by choosing virtualization and procuring hardware that uses less space and consumes less power.

Server virtualisation reduces the number of physical servers, saving on power, floor space and cooling. Sharing of CPU cycles and memory means better utilisation of the computing power of the servers.

Our data centre set up is using blade technology where more servers can be installed with the same floor space as compared to traditional rack mount servers. Blade servers utilise lesser energy for cooling and power.

Beyond data centres, each and everyone of us has a huge part to play too. Researches have shown that IT's environmental impacts can be greatly reduced by behavioural changes, as well as technological changes.

»What can I do?

Here are just some of the steps we can take to save the environment:

  • Power off monitors and PCs after use. Do not leave them on in standby mode.
  • Review and set the appropriate power option for your PC to reduce power usage.
  • Print only when necessary. Read lecture notes off the monitor screens or notebooks instead of printing them out. If printing is unavoidable, use "2-page in one" setting and print on both sides of the paper.
  • Travel less, reduce the carbon footprint - use virtual meeting places instead with today's Web 2.0 technologies.
  • Re-purpose old PCs by donating to charities or non-profit organizations.
  • Buy products from companies that participates actively in recycling. For example, some major campanies have collection centres for used printer cartridges and batteries.

»Conclusion

I remember receiving an email with the tag line at the bottom: "Please consider the environment before printing this email, Save Tree ", words in green no less. Yes, the message is clear, Green IT begins with me!
